Senior leader Sonia Gandhi has opened up about the Emergency period, agreeing that democratic rights had been curtailed during that era. The remarks come ahead of the worldwide release of her memoir titled Belonging: A Journey Of Love on November 10. Speaking to N Ram, she refused to pin the blame entirely on Sanjay Gandhi for the excesses. She stated that there was immense pressure from some of the senior colleagues of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi rather than just one individual. She noted that while Sanjay Gandhi is often seen as synonymous with the controversial period in the public mind, very few people actually understood the internal party pressures. The matter forms part of her upcoming literary work detailing her life journey.
