Mohammed Shami rose from a small village in Uttar Pradesh's Amroha district to become one of India's greatest fast bowlers. Growing up near sugarcane fields, Shami trained under coach Badruddin Siddique before moving to Kolkata as a teenager. After failing to make Uttar Pradesh age-group teams, a 16-year-old Shami boarded a train to Kolkata following a club recommendation. He played for Dalhousie Athletic Club and later Town Club, where official Debabrata Das accommodated him at his home. Bengal's chief selector Sambaran Banerjee eventually spotted Shami in a local match taking four wickets. His distinct preference for running and long bowling spells instead of gym workouts defined his remarkable journey.
