Brazil has expanded two major conservation units in the state of Mato Grosso by a combined 257,531 acres to strengthen protection for vital jaguar habitats and vulnerable species. The expansion took place on March 23, 2026, according to the Andes Amazon Fund. The project enlarges the Pantanal Mato-Grossense National Park and the Taiamã Ecological Station, safeguarding critical wetlands, flooded tropical forests, and savannas. Conservation group Re:wild, co-founded by actor Leonardo DiCaprio, praised the collaborative efforts to secure these natural landscapes against habitat loss and wildfires. The enlarged protected zones aim to improve ecological connectivity, support artisanal fishing communities, and mitigate the rising threat of wildfires across the region. These combined conservation measures provide enhanced security for wildlife and local populations depending on the wetland ecosystem.
